DESCRIPTION:
APW - Elgin, with rare quail hunting scene dial, 17J, 18S, gold-filled HC recase with interesting hunting scenes to front and rear, white enamel SS dial with exquisite gray-scale imagery of a hunter standing with rifle in front of a mountain lake, his dog in foreground at lower-left, quail in seconds-register, "E.N.W.Co." marking in subtle small lettering at top of scene, fancy Roman numerals, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#13248386. A rare and visually spectacular dial, this dial design was listed in Elgin factory literature as "Sporting, Quail Shooting" style and was from Elgin's series of "Society, Sporting & Fancy" dials.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, balance motion is sluggish with excess escapement noise when in the dial up position, overhaul recommended, mvt with some looseness within case despite tight case screws, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine scratches with the most notable crossing barrel bridge; dial with small chip at center that visually doesn't draw much attention among the scene detail, some scattered light hls, small edge chip under bezel near 2; fine hands, minute with oxide throughout tip; case shows ample wear, some dings and mild shallow dents to rear, reduced engraving detail with full loss to much of shoulder detail but central hunting scenes remain attractive with their detail still distinct, slivers of wear to brass to ridges at outer perimeter of front and rear, some wear to brass to band and at high points of pendant, case lift spring needs assistance for opening front lid through the initial portion of its opening range; bow pivots freely and with significant play within larger gauge pendant sockets, crown shows substantial wear; clean plastic crystal.
